Abstract

In 2025, the global public health funding scene was profoundly shaken, which also impacted global health programmes, including the human immunodeficiency (HIV) response at the global and national levels in many countries. The featured story on the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS UNAIDS website (1) presents a sobering assessment. It mentions that 14% countries reported six or fewer months of stock for at least one antiretroviral therapy (ART) drug, and 21% countries reported a significant reduction in HIV testing commodities.(1) In September 2025, the United Nations Secretary-General's report for the UN80 Initiative mentioned a plan to sunset UNAIDS by the end of 2026.  The main reason is the global funding crisis.(2)
